On the Front Lines of Risk and Danger
While it has always been considered one of the most stressful occupations in the world, law enforcement doesn't hold the copyright on stress. Instead, it's the uniqueness of police stress, the work, the responsibility for people, the dangers associated with the job, the long, irregular hours, the pressures placed upon you to perform at your maximum capacity 24-hours a day and the need to control your emotions on a fulltime basis.
We call this Image Armor...
...the need to always look the infallible law enforcement professional. Dr. Reese know's from personal experience the type of stress you take home with you – as a police officer, fire or EMS professional. More importantly he show's you how to identify and better deal with how this stress impacts upon us as individuals as well as our support system.
Dr. Reese was chosen by the Director of the FBI to monitor the bureaus Psychological Services Program when it began in 1980. With the continued full support of the Director the program flourishes today, regularly calling upon Dr. Reese for assistance.
Taking “It” On, and On
We as emergency response professionals spend an inordinate amount of time investigating and responding to violent and traumatic events. What Dr. Reese and his colleagues refer to as “vicarious victimization”. As a Trauma response provider you know that one can only experience so much of this stress without eventually incorporating some of it into one's life.
It was based upon his own experience with this type of occurrence and the stories told by fellow FBI profilers and police officers that lead Dr. Reese to devote his professional life to building stress management programs. Such vicarious victimization led James T. Reese and Associates to develop post-critical incident policies the world over, including England and Northern Ireland. James T. Reese and Associates continue, today, to build effective stress management programs for corporations, law enforcement and a variety of at-risk organizations.
